Opening of Lounge 72 in Honor of Colin Brown
The first phase of renovations to Lounge 72 at the Affton Ice Rink will be unveiled at a private celebration with Colin Brown's family and teammates on Sunday, November 23. Starting December 1, the room will be open for rental. We hope that this space will be a place for our teams to gather in the spirit of sportsmanship and leadership that Colin displayed both on and off the ice.
Lounge 72 may be rented by contacting Todd Schlereth, Affton Hockey Programs Director, at 314-267-5944. Affton Americans, Lady Liberty, and Eagles teams are required to place a deposit when reserving the room that will be refunded if the space is left in satisfactory condition. Rental fees will apply to outside renters.
In June the club announced plans to renovate the upstairs meeting room at the Affton Ice Rink and rename it in honor of Colin Brown as part of our efforts to keep Colin's spirit alive in our organization.
The Brown Family generously donated a portion of the money raised in Colin's memory to Affton Hockey. This money, along with funds from Affton Hockey, were used for the project. The space will be used for a variety of purposes including team video training, team bonding events, coach and manager meetings, and special events such as high school senior nights.
Affton Hockey is grateful for the participation of local businesses with ties to hockey that generously contributed labor and materials to this project. Working Spaces, an office design company, donated design services and Kimball International provided discounted furniture. Shaw Company Store donated 1,400 square feet of flooring and provided discounted pricing on the remainder. We also appreciate the many generous donors who contributed to this project.
The next stage will include renovations of the small kitchen and bathroom inside the room. Affton Hockey welcomes any monetary or in-kind donations to assist with this phase of renovations. Donations may be made through our website, afftonhockey.org. Donations may be made through our website, afftonhockey.org. Those interested in making an in-kind donation to this project should contact Julie Jordan at afftonallplayhockey@gmail.com.
A bar made of hockey sticks similar to the one in the Affton Ice Rink lobby will be built under the windows in Lounge 72. Old sticks may be donated in the designated container in the rink attendant office at Affton Ice Rink. Sticks should have a minimum of 36 inches of straight shaft from handle to blade. Full sticks that include both handle and blade are preferred. Players may choose to write their number or a message in memory of Colin Brown on the stick. Messages should be centered on the wider side of the stick. We will make every effort to use all donated sticks but we are unable to guarantee that every stick will be used in the project.
